My name is Sana Nisar Ahmad. I’m in my final year of a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Waikato and I’m really passionate about health equity, mental wellbeing and caring for people in my community. I’m also part of the Youth Advisory Group for the Child and Youth Mental Health Study which has been a great way to contribute to improving wellbeing support for young people.
Alongside my studies I’m the Vice President of the Waikato Muslim Students’ Association and have been actively involved in the wider Muslim community here in Hamilton. For the past three years I’ve been part of the Hamilton Eid Day team which has been a really special experience, helping organise one of the biggest community gatherings and seeing everyone come together to celebrate.
Since 2023 I’ve also been involved in the Muslim Diversity Study and in research on health equity education. This work reflects my passion for making sure minority voices are heard and valued. Coming from a Pakistani Afghan background I carry with me the values of service, understanding and community.
